Helmet fitting at Lids for Kids 2025

Bicycle Helmet Giveaway Events Dedicated to Protecting Children

Continuing a proud tradition spanning more than two decades, this year’s Lids for Kids events in Lansing and Grand Rapids were once again a resounding success! Hosted annually by Sinas Dramis Law Firm in partnership with local organizations, these premier bicycle helmet giveaway and safety events are dedicated to protecting children throughout Michigan.

“We know from our cases that kids who wear a helmet fare much better in a bike accident than kids who don’t. Giving away helmets is about preventing serious injuries,” said Stephen Sinas, partner at Sinas Dramis Law Firm.

A properly fitted helmet remains the single most effective way to prevent head and brain injuries in a bicycle crash. According to the Children’s Safety Network, wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of:

  • Head injuries by 85%
  • Brain injuries by 88%
  • Severe brain injuries by at least 75%

Yet, fewer than 15% of children under 14 consistently wear helmets while riding. Lids for Kids aims to change that statistic—one child at a time.

Lansing Bicycle Helmet Giveaway

The 21st annual Lids for Kids Lansing event took place on May 17, just two days after high winds and tornadoes left trees downed, roads closed, and power outages across the city. Despite chilly, rainy weather, the community came together and pressed on.

Thanks to the dedication of volunteers and community support, 260 children received custom-fitted helmets, and 24 brand-new bicycles were given away in raffle drawings.

“Our family has had a very tough time recently, and getting the helmets and winning bicycles was the pick-me-up we needed,” shared one grateful mother.

Held at the Marshall Street Fire Station on Lansing’s east side, the event also featured:

  • Balloon twisting by the ever-popular Chris Cornwell
  • Appearances by League of Enchantment characters
  • Firefighters from the Lansing Fire Department showcasing a fire engine

Special thanks to Mayor Andy Schor, City Council Member Trina Pehlivanoglu, and Ingham County Commissioner Thomas Morgan for stopping by to share bike safety tips and show their support, and to WLNS-TV 6 News Anchor Megan Viecelli for emceeing the event with Stephen Sinas.

Grand Rapids Bicycle Helmet Giveaway

In contrast, the weather was picture-perfect for the Grand Rapids event on May 31. A crisp morning warmed into a sunny, 72-degree day under a clear, Pure Michigan sky—ideal conditions for a community celebration.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of Lids for Kids Grand Rapids, held at Garfield Park. The team gave away 424 helmets and raffled off 29 bicycles.

“I’m so happy to be part of this event. The safety of our families in our neighborhoods is so important. Thanks for your work!” said Grand Rapids City Commissioner Marshall Kilgore.

He was joined by several community leaders and supporters, including:

  • Congresswoman Hillary Scholten
  • State Representative Kristian Grant
  • Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom
  • Fox 17 Anchor Josh Berry, who emceed the festivities alongside Sinas Dramis Partner Tom Sinas

Lids for Kids: A Lasting Impact

Over the past 22 years, Lids for Kids has provided more than 14,000 children with properly fitted bike helmets.

“Before we’re lawyers and staff, we’re mothers, fathers, and community members. The last thing we ever want to see is a child with a brain injury,” said Tom Sinas. “Lids for Kids is one of the simplest, most powerful ways to promote brain injury prevention in our communities.”
